Position Summary
The Quality Control Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of laboratory facilities and managing all quality control (QC) activities related to Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and other construction materials. This position ensures materials meet project specifications, supports plant operations, and provides technical leadership to QC staff while coordinating with internal teams, customers, and regulatory agencies.
Duties & Responsibilities
Quality Control & Technical Oversight
- Review, approve, and maintain all HMA mix designs.
- Monitor and evaluate mix performance, quality trends, and economic efficiency during production.
- Provide technical support to asphalt plant operations, including direct recommendations or adjustments to plant settings to maintain specification compliance.
- Ensure compliance with applicable DOT, AASHTO, ASTM, and project-specific specifications.
- Investigate, document, and resolve material nonconformances and quality issues.
Laboratory & Operations Management
- Manage and oversee daily laboratory operations, staffing, scheduling, and workload prioritization.
- Schedule and coordinate all QC testing activities for HMA and related construction materials.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, calibration schedules, and testing documentation.
- Develop and implement laboratory procedures, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead strategic planning for laboratory operations, capacity, and future needs.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to QC technicians and laboratory staff.
- Collaborate internally with Interstate Testing Services (ITS) and Lionmark Construction team members.
- Assist with construction material bidding and technical input for project proposals.
- Communicate effectively with Asphalt Operations, ITS customers, and regulatory agencies (DOT).
- Represent the company during audits, inspections, and project meetings as required.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company and regulatory safety policies.
- Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and record retention in accordance with company and DOT requirements.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in HMA Mix Designs.
- Minimum of 4-years field HMA (SuperPave) testing experience.
- General laboratory experience and working knowledge of AASHTO specifications.
- DOT or Industry Certifications in HMA and Aggregate
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- 4 Year Degree or equivalent
- Prior supervisory or management experience is strongly preferred.
